256:Poetry Unit

I am teaching a unit on poetry for my World, American and British Literature courses. Students are looking at poetry by various authors for comprehension, structure and analysis, including writing poetry analysis essays. We are writing some poetry of our own, too. Poetry is a hard sell to some people. Especially if they are under the age of, oh….about 50.

I myself tend to prefer writing free verse poetry, since I am lazy and hate going through all the conundrums to actually say what I want to say and make it rhyme.  One of mine:

When I was a little girl

I wanted to be rich and a mama and married to a handsome prince.

And now that I am a grownup……

You know, I haven’t changed a bit.
