Why do you feel that you need to choose one or the other?
If you are looking for a mini vacation from your own life (something that sounds very interesting, BTW), you could read a book and slip into a fictional life without any danger of someone getting the idea that they ‘own you’ because your focus is on pleasing them instead of finding what makes you happy.

I think that we find ourselves thinking clearest when we around those we love openly. I hope you find someone soon.
